FAQ
Retaining Walls

  • Retaining walls are constructed to hold back soil and prevent erosion. They are a very common necessity in the hilly terrain of the Adelaide Hills. They allow a level space of land to be constructed to build a home on the land, to create a smooth grassed back yard area, for aesthetic purposes and more.

  • We offer the Adelaide Hills various types of retaining walls, including concrete sleeper, block and rock retaining walls. Each material has its benefits depending on aesthetics, durability, and budget, as well as variations in colour and texture to choose from.

  • If your Adelaide property has a slope or uneven terrain, a retaining wall can help level it out and prevent erosion. If you’re noticing soil erosion, water runoff issues, or instability in your yard, a retaining wall might be necessary.

  • The cost of a retaining wall depends on factors like the material chosen, the height of the wall, the length of the wall, and the complexity of the installation. We offer free on-site quotes to provide you with an accurate estimate of the costing.

  • The timeline varies based on the size and complexity of the project. On average, a typical residential retaining wall can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks to complete. We’ll give you a more accurate timeframe during the our on-site quote, as well as a job start time once the quotation has been accepted.

  • Depending on the size and the location of your retaining wall you may require an engineer and council approval. We will discuss this with you at your on-site quote to ensure we give you the proper advice for your circumstances.

  • We are qualified and experience in building walls off all shapes, sizes and heights. We also hold the license necessary in Adelaide to build walls above 1m.

  • Retaining walls are low maintenance. They may require the occasional cleaning deepening on where they are located. As Kelert Constructions builds with only the highest quality materials and years of experience, our walls are strong and build to stand the test of time.

We do not construct wooden retaining walls, as the material does require maintenance and regular inspections. Although, to do often replace weathered wooden retaining walls, contact us for a quote.

  • Proper drainage is essential for a long-lasting retaining wall. We include drainage systems to ensure that water doesn’t get trapped behind the wall, which could lead to damage. With a qualified plumber on the team, you can rest assured that a stormwater and drainage specialist has worked on your project.

  • While it’s possible to install a retaining wall yourself, we strongly recommend hiring a professional (Retaining walls above 1m need to be constructed by a licensed professional like us). Proper installation is critical to ensure stability, especially if your wall is holding back a significant amount of soil. We have the experience, machinery, tools, and knowledge to do the job right.

  • Factors to consider include the aesthetic appeal, durability, budget, location, and the purpose of the wall. For example, stone and brick can be more decorative, while concrete sleepers might be more functional and affordable.

  • Yes! A well-designed retaining wall can enhance your property’s curb appeal, create usable space, and prevent erosion—making it a great investment if you’re looking to sell your home in the future.

  • Yes, adding plants or greenery to the top or around your retaining wall can improve its appearance and blend it into your landscape. However, it’s essential to choose plants with roots that won’t compromise the wall’s structural integrity.

  • If your retaining wall is showing signs of damage (such as cracking, tilting, or water pooling), it’s essential to have it inspected and repaired promptly. We offer professional replacement services to restore the stability of your land and continue to prevent water damage and erosion to your home.

  • A retaining wall may be built at any stage of a home build, including years after the home has been built. Because of this, the best time will be determined by the house being built, the space around it and the wall needed. Houses requiring a tight access retaining wall construction are recommended to have the wall constructed early in the building timeline.
